Vietnam - European Union deepen cooperation relationship
On September 8, at the National Assembly Office, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue received Mr. Bernd Lange, Chairman of the Committee on International Trade Commission (INTA) of the European Parliament (EP).

The Chairman of the National Assembly expressed his pleasure to meet Mr. Bernd Lange again. He said that this visit to Vietnam led by the President of INTA took place at a time when the fields of cooperation between Vietnam and the European Union (EU) were making good progress; especially after 2 years of the implementation of the Vietnam - EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA). Supposing this is an agreement of very high standards, the National Assembly Chairman emphasized that despite the heavy impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the disruption of supply chains in the region and the world, the relationship of economy and trade between Vietnam and the EU have both grown well. This is a positive effect from the reality of the EVFTA Agreement. Besides, although the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) has just been ratified by 12 countries in the EU and has not yet come into force, EU businesses and investors have been paying attention to the market of Vietnam.

The Chairman of the National Assembly highly appreciated and thanked INTA, the European Parliament as well as the role and efforts of Mr. Bernd Lange for making great contributions to the process of negotiation, ratification, and implementation of the EVFTA Agreement.

Chairman of the Committee on International Trade Commission (INTA) of the European Parliament (EP) Bernd Lange thanked the warm welcome of the Chairman of the National Assembly Vuong Dinh Hue; And, he believed that the EVFTA Agreement is a very solid foundation for moving towards a new development in the Vietnam - EU relations in the future. Statistics in the two years of implementation of this Agreement show positive economic impacts, especially growth promotion in the post period of Covid-19 pandemic.

With the EVIPA Agreement, Mr. Bernd Lange said that the delay in the ratification process is due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. At this stage, EU member states are more ready to continue promoting the ratification of the agreement, especially in the current context that EU member states all wish for stability, reliable partners.

At the meeting, the National Assembly Chairman said that Vietnam wishes to deepen its cooperation with the EU as well as each EU member state. The EU supports Vietnam's candidacy for the position of a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the term 2023-2025 and continues to strengthen the cooperation between the EU and ASEAN, especially promoting ASEAN's central role in regional cooperation. In addition, the EU continues to promote cooperation in the field of energy, combating climate change, especially cooperation in the field of equitable energy transition, helps Vietnam to fulfill its commitments at COP26. including promoting the implementation of a tripartite partnership between the EU - UK - Vietnam; continues to support and cooperate with Vietnam in the field of digital transformation in the next 5 years and orientation of this affair to 2030. The two parties have regularly exchanged, removed and promptly solved problems in the import - export process of goods, especially agricultural, forestry and fishery products from Vietnam to the EU market.

Referring to Vietnam's efforts in combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, the National Assembly Chairman hoped the EU would continue to deploy working delegations to Vietnam to directly assess Vietnam's IUU implementation, to soon remove the "yellow card" warning from the European Commission, contributing to ensuring the livelihoods of Vietnamese fishermen. Emphasizing that Vietnam, including the National Assembly of Vietnam, continues to make efforts and drastically implement international commitments in this field, the National Assembly Chairman shared that this is also a process that needs a roadmap and support from international partners, including the EU.

Sharing about the current international situation with difficulties and complications, including the impact from the Covid-19 epidemic, the National Assembly Chairwoman hoped that the two sides would continue to strengthen exchanges on international issues that the two sides are concerned about. shared interest, especially in strengthening the global supply chain and direct supply chain between Vietnam and the EU, on economic recovery after the pandemic, ensuring food security and stabilizing energy prices during the pandemic. next.

Chairman ofINTA agreed with the comments of the Chairman of the National Assembly Vuong Dinh Hue and shared that, Vietnam has always been a reliable partner of the European Union. The EU and Vietnam have a very close relationship, reflected in agreements such as: EVFTA, Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation between Vietnam and EU (PCA); along with cooperation frameworks in specific fields such as: renewable energy, greenhouse gas emission reduction, green infrastructure development, etc.

At the meeting, when discussing international and regional situations of mutual concern, the Chairman of the International Trade Committee of the European Parliament emphasized the stance of himself and the EU in favor of freedom of navigation and overflight on the sea; supported a stance towards respect for international law. He also emphasized Vietnam's important role in the ASEAN community, especially with the achievements that Vietnam has contributed and created within the ASEAN framework.
