On the afternoon of January 17, in Hanoi, Minister of Foreign
Affairs Bui Thanh Son chaired a press conference on Vietnam's fulfillment of
the role as a non - permanent member of the United Nations Security Council
(UNSC) for the term 2020-2021. At the press conference, there was the attendance of
representatives of Embassies of some countries and international organizations
in Hanoi.
According to Minister Bui Thanh Son, over the past two years,
Vietnam, together with other permanent and non-permanent members of the UNSC,
has worked hard to fulfil
its UNSC non-permanent membership for 2020-2021 term. The past two years have been a very challenging period for the
world in general and the United Nations Security Council in particular due to
complicated, unpredictable and unprecedented changes in the international
situation. Wars, conflicts and instability have taken place in many
regions, even broken out in new areas around the world. Strategic competition
between major powers, powerful political acts, non-compliance with the UN
Charter and international law have caused challenges to maintain peace and
stability worldwide while global issues such as climate changes, epidemics,
food security, water source security, terrorism... are increasingly complex. Especially, the serious impact of COVID-19 pandemic has forced
countries to adjust both domestic and foreign priorities in response to
economic recovery and development. The United Nations itself also had to be closed
down and run online for a long time.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son assessed, in that
context, the UNSC has adapted quickly, maintained its activities well, and
promoted its role as the most important and irreplaceable mechanism in
maintaining international peace and security.
According to statistics, for two years, the UNSC has had more
than 840 meetings of ambassadorial level and higher level and thousands of
consultations at all levels; approved 254 documents in different forms. The UNSC has had an agenda, with a wide range of content,
covering all continents, many hot spots and international issues of interest
from COVID-19 pandemic to climate change, maritime security, peace, human
rights, counter-terrorism, conflict and instability in Syria, Yemen, Israel
Palestine, Ethiopia, Haiti, Myanmar... The United Nations Security Council has strengthened the
collaboration with the regional organizations, including the European Union and
the African Union, especially ASEAN.
“Vietnam attaches importance to and wants to raise its voice to
promote work at the UNSC in general for common benefits of the UN member states
while contributing to maintaining global peace and security. This comes from
the fact that 192/193 UN member have supported the election of Vietnam to a
non-permanent member of the Security Council and Vietnam has made responsible
contributions to multilateral mechanisms, including the UN and firstly the
UNSC.” emphasized Minister Bui Thanh Son.
Also according to Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son, with
the consistent motto "Partnership for sustainable peace", Vietnam
joined the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in an active, positive and
responsible manner, proposed a number of initiatives to make practical
contributions to the UNSC’s work, upheld the council's role in seeking
solutions to preventing and dealing with conflicts and responding to challenges
to global peace and security in line with the UN Charter and international law.
He affirmed that Vietnam had a successful tenure as a
non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for
2020-2021, a difficult period for the world and the UNSC in particular due to
complicated, uncertain and unprecedented developments in the world. It is the
result of Vietnam’s foreign policy of independence, self-reliance,
multilateralization and diversification of ties; making responsible
contributions to multilateral mechanisms, including the UN and firstly the
UNSC.
This is also the result of the cooperation of the whole
political system, the wise leadership and direct participation of senior
leaders of the Party and State, the synchronous, rhythmic and close
coordination of the ministries, departments, sectors and a network of
Vietnamese representative agencies abroad.
